Papa Hou was developed for The Kind Foundation (formerly YMCA), a values-driven organisation with a bold vision for a multi-purpose community hub. The site brings together a range of services, including a hotel, early childhood centre, health services, eateries, a fitness centre, and spaces for various community groups.
Designed in collaboration with Architectus, TMCO, and Matapopore, the project was deeply informed by cultural narrative and the diverse needs of The Kind Foundation’s members. The design weaves these elements into a cohesive space that reflects strong connections to people and place.
A central influence was the work of Ngāi Tahu artist Fayne Robinson, whose artwork shaped the spatial layout and storytelling across the site. Planting and water management strategies were carefully developed to support and enhance this narrative, grounding the site in its unique cultural and environmental context.
