The Dolomite Point Redevelopment at Punakaiki on the West Coast has transformed the visitor centre at one of New Zealand’s iconic natural tourist destinations.
This project focused on upgrading visitor facilities and infrastructure while enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Working in collaboration with Sheppard & RoutArchitects, Davie Lovell Smith, and Ngāti Waewae artists, our team was responsible for the planning, design, detailing,
and construction observation of all landscape works. A key goal was to ensure the new and existing built elements complemented the sensitive natural environment
—immersing visitors in the unique Nīkau palm canopy and geologically rich landscape.
Our scope included the design of hardscapes and planting for car parking areas, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, retail frontages, and landscape works
surrounding Punangairi—the striking,landscape-inspired new Visitor Centre. Features include elevated decks andwalkways, custom street furniture,
integrated artworks, and one of Aotearoa’s largest greenroofs.
This project was part of the Provincial Growth Fundinitiative, aimed at strengthening West Coast tourism and providing employmentand training opportunities
for the local community. Local contractors, suppliers, materials, and ecologically sourced plant species were all essential to theproject’s success.
